Can’t Apple Wallet already do this?

Truefold gives the broader set of personal and family records a structured home: passports, citizenship documents, birth and marriage certificates, education certificates, visas, insurance records, bank details, property documents, and their attachments. Truefold complements Apple Wallet rather than replacing it.

Why not keep my documents in Google Drive, Files, or Photos?

Those are excellent places to store general files. But as folders, scans, downloads, emails, and chat attachments accumulate, finding the right document — or one detail inside it — can become a hunt. Truefold organises records by type, person, and country, keeps important details ready to copy, and stores an offline copy on your iPhone. You can still keep your original files or backups wherever you prefer.

Why was Truefold created?

Truefold began as an app its creator wanted for himself. Managing documents across three countries started with carefully organised Google Drive folders, but over time the working copies became scattered across Drive history, email, chats, downloads, and photos. Truefold was built to make those records easy to retrieve from one private, organised place — especially when they are needed urgently.

Does Truefold work without an internet connection?

Yes. Your vault is stored locally on your iPhone, so your saved records, details, and attachments remain available without a network connection. That is useful at airports, border checkpoints, and government offices where reception may be weak or unavailable. iCloud syncing catches up when your iPhone reconnects.

Does Truefold replace my physical documents?

No. Truefold is for private reference and convenient retrieval. It is not an official digital identity and does not replace a passport, citizenship card, certificate, or any other original document when an authority requires one.

Can Truefold read my documents for me?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for the documents that carry a machine-readable part. When you add the photo for a record, Truefold reads the strip of letters and numbers on a passport, national ID, residence permit or visa photo page; the barcode on the back of a US or Canadian driving license; a boarding pass barcode; and the number on a payment card. It fills in what it finds and leaves the rest for you. Everything happens on your iPhone — no image and no text is ever uploaded, and nothing is saved until you review it on the next screen. Anything you have typed yourself is never overwritten, and if the document looks like it is from a different country than the one you chose, Truefold asks rather than guessing.

I added a photo and nothing was filled in. Why?

Most documents have nothing for a phone to read reliably, and that is normal rather than a fault. Truefold only reads machine-readable parts it can check for itself — a passport’s printed strip, a US or Canadian license barcode, a boarding pass barcode, a card number. A birth certificate, a property deed, an insurance policy or a utility bill carries none of those, so Truefold stays quiet and leaves the form for you to fill in. It also fills in nothing when a reading fails its own check, because a wrong detail on a document you rely on is worse than a blank field. If you photographed a passport or license and expected a result, try a clearer, flatter photo in good light — and for a driving license, remember the barcode is on the back.

Does Truefold know my country’s documents?

Very likely. Choose your country when adding a record and the type list leads with the documents that country actually issues, under their own names — Emirates ID, NRIC, MyKad, CPF, Codice Fiscale, PESEL, My Number Card, Aadhaar and more than 160 others across 44 countries — each with the right identifier label and number format. If your document is not listed by name, the general types (passport, national ID, driving license, and so on) cover it, and you can add your own fields to any record.

What language does Truefold use?

Truefold follows your iPhone’s language automatically where a translation is available, and English otherwise. Country names and document field labels follow too, and records you saved earlier update on their own — a passport saved while your phone was in one language shows its country and field names in whatever language your phone uses now. You can also set a language just for Truefold in Settings › Apps › Truefold › Language. Document names stay as they are printed on the real document.

What can I store in Truefold?

IDs (passports, national IDs, driving licenses), bank accounts, payment cards, travel documents (visas, tickets, reservations), and personal documents like certificates and insurance. Each type has a template with the right fields built in, plus room for attachments and scans.

What do I need to run Truefold?

An iPhone running iOS 26 or later. For syncing across devices, each iPhone just needs to be signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Truefold uses the Apple Account already signed in on your iPhone. There is no separate sign-up, username, or password to manage.

Truefold is free to download on the App Store for a limited time while it launches. It will become a paid app later — but if you download it while it’s free, it stays yours.

No. Truefold is a private, personal copy of your information for your own convenience. It does not replace any government or third-party document, and it is not affiliated with any issuing authority. Always use your official documents where one is required.

How does syncing between devices work?

When your iPhones are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud enabled, your vault synchronises automatically through your private iCloud. There is no Truefold server involved — the data moves between your devices and your iCloud storage.

A record isn’t showing up on my other iPhone. What should I check?

First, confirm both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account and iCloud is on (Settings → your name → iCloud). Then check that syncing isn’t paused in Truefold’s own Settings, and that both devices have a network connection. Sync usually catches up within moments of opening the app.

Why does Truefold recommend keeping iCloud Keychain on?

Your encryption keys travel between your own devices through iCloud Keychain. With it on, a new iPhone can decrypt your sensitive values automatically. With it off, a new device can still show non-sensitive information, but sensitive values stay locked until the keys arrive.

Can I turn syncing off?

Yes. Open Settings in the app and pause iCloud sync. Your data stays on the device, and you can resume syncing at any time.

I got a new iPhone. How do I move my vault?

Accepted Answer

Sign in to the same Apple Account, install Truefold, and your vault syncs down from your private iCloud. Keeping iCloud Keychain on lets the new device decrypt your sensitive values automatically.

Where is my data stored?

What does “end-to-end encrypted” mean in Truefold?

Sensitive values (like passport and card numbers) and attachment scans are encrypted with AES-GCM on your device before they are stored or synced. iCloud only ever carries the encrypted form, and the keys never leave your own devices, so neither Truefold nor anyone else can read them.

How does the app lock work?

Truefold locks with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode — the same protection as your iPhone itself. After you unlock, a short session keeps the app usable while you switch between apps; a genuine absence locks it again.

What if my iPhone is lost or stolen?

Your vault stays protected by three layers: the phone’s own passcode or Face ID, Truefold’s app lock, and encryption on sensitive values and scans. Use Apple’s Find My to lock or erase the device remotely — erasing removes Truefold’s local data along with everything else. Your documents aren’t lost: sign in to your Apple Account on a replacement iPhone and your vault syncs back down from your private iCloud, with iCloud Keychain restoring your encryption keys.

What does Truefold collect about me?

Nothing. No analytics, no ads, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs. The App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected”.

Can you recover my data if I lose my device?

Accepted Answer

No. Your encryption keys are held only on your own devices and never reach us, so we cannot recover your data or reset anything for you. Keep your Apple Account, device passcode, and iCloud Keychain accessible — they are what bring your vault back on a new device.

How do I export my data?

Accepted Answer

Open Settings in the app and choose “Export Data” to save a complete copy of your vault. This is also the way to take your data with you under privacy laws such as the GDPR.

How do I delete everything?

Accepted Answer

Open Settings in the app and choose “Delete All Data”. After you confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, this erases your vault, its attachments, and its synced iCloud copy. If you use Truefold on more than one iPhone, each keeps its own local copy until you delete it there as well. Deleting the app also removes its local data.
